Positive Reinforcement Basics: My Journey with Leash Training

Leash training can be one of the first big hurdles for new puppy owners, and it certainly was for me with Buster, my energetic young Labrador! I’m a firm believer in positive reinforcement, and it’s worked wonders.

Here’s what worked for us:

  1. High-Value Treats: Super small, super tasty treats.

  2. Short Sessions: 5-10 minutes, several times a day.

  3. Consistency: Everyone in the family followed the same rules.

  4. Reward Calmness: Treat when the leash is loose, not when pulling.

It takes patience, but seeing Buster walk politely on a leash now is so rewarding! What training methods have you found most effective for leash manners or other common behaviors?
