The Cosy Cat: Keeping Your Feline Safe This Winter

Hi all,

Winter can be a dangerous time for cats, especially for those who love to roam. Here are the most important safety tips from welfare groups like Cats Protection and the RSPCA.

1. The Engine Warning: Check Your Car!

  • This is the #1 killer of cats in winter. Cats climb into warm car engines for shelter.
  • Always bang loudly on your car bonnet and check under the car before you start the engine. Give any sleeping cat a chance to escape.

2. Indoors is Safest:

  • The best place for a cat during cold, wet weather is inside, especially at night.
  • If you’re keeping your cat in more, make sure you provide a clean litter tray and prevent boredom with toys and scratch posts.

3. For Outdoor-Access Cats:

  • Shelter is Non-Negotiable: If your cat goes out, they must have 24/7 access to a warm, dry, and sheltered spot. This can be a cat flap into your home, or a dry, insulated outdoor shelter (like in a shed) with warm bedding.
  • Don’t Lock Them Out: Never lock a cat out of the house.
  • Check Sheds: Before you lock your shed or garage, check that a neighbour’s cat (or your own!) hasn’t snuck in for a nap.

4. The Antifreeze Danger:

  • Antifreeze is highly poisonous to cats and they are attracted to its sweet taste.
  • Keep it stored safely, and clean any spills from your driveway immediately. Even a tiny amount can cause fatal kidney failure.

Let’s keep all our feline friends safe and warm.
