Hi neighbours,
With the cold, damp weather and long dark evenings setting in, it’s a crucial time to adjust our pet care routines. I’ve compiled some essential tips from leading animal welfare charities to keep all our furry friends safe and warm this Irish winter.
Key Winter Dangers to Watch For:
- Antifreeze: This is extremely toxic and often leaks from cars. Its sweet taste attracts pets, but even a tiny amount can be lethal. Clean up any spills immediately and store bottles securely.
- Cars as Fridges: Never, ever leave a pet in a cold car. Cars act like refrigerators in winter, trapping the cold and can cause your pet to freeze.
- Indoor Hazards: Be careful with open fires, space heaters, and electric blankets. Always use a fireguard, and don’t let pets get too close—they can get burned or knock them over.
Warmth, Shelter & Health:
- Dry, Warm Bedding: Ensure your pet’s bed is in a warm, draft-free spot. For older pets or those with arthritis, the cold can be very painful, so consider a raised bed or extra blankets.
- Check Water Bowls: If you have any outdoor water bowls (which should be avoided if possible), check them multiple times a day to ensure they haven’t frozen over.
- Food Adjustments: Pets who spend a lot of time outside may need more calories to stay warm. However, pets who become less active (snuggled up inside!) may need slightly less food to avoid weight gain. Check with your vet if you’re unsure.
- Parasite Prevention: Don’t stop flea and worm treatment! With the central heating on, our warm homes are a perfect breeding ground for fleas.
Stay warm and keep them safe!
